The Film

Theater is a refuge, a protest, a mirror. Artists are both witnesses and visionaries. From Kherson to Stockholm’s Teater Giljotin, two stages connected by a shared question: What is art’s role when the world is breaking apart?

Join us for the screening of (Im)possible to Stay / Лишатися (Не) Можна, 2023, Dir. Serhii Zeinalov (Ukraine), 104’ -- a powerful film about the artists of the Kherson Theater who joined pro-Ukrainian rallies in the first days of the occupation and were later forced to flee. Those who stayed spent months creating underground, in the theater’s basement, keeping art, and life, alive. Trailer

Screened at Teater Giljotin, this film becomes a bridge between two theaters, two cities, and one shared act of resistance.

As Ukraine undergoes a profound cultural renaissance, artists across the country are transforming loss into vision and rebuilding identity through creation. Join the post-screening conversation on creative resistance, cultural renewal, and the artist’s role in times of rupture.

Serhii Zeinalov, film writer, ethnographic filmmaker and director of Im(possible) to Stay. Serhii is from the Kherson region in Eastern Ukraine and is also co-director of the Ukrainian OKO International Ethnographic Film Festival in Bulgaria. His previous films include Remember Me (2022), SAVE (2023), and Music Ambassadors Tour: A trip through Ukraine during the war (2023). He will join us for the discussion of how theater artists and creatives in Ukraine are taking a stance of courage and resistance in times of rupture.

Tetiana Staneva, an ethnographic filmmaker, foreign correspondent from Ukraine, and founder and director of the Ukrainian OKO International Ethnographic Film Festival. Tetiana comes from Bessarabia, where OKO was born in 2020 as a bridge between cultures and places, a response to disinformation, and, in times of war, as a cultural lifeline. Her works include Place of Power (2018), Letters from the War. Letter 1: The Pulse of Ukraine (2024), From Bloom to Flame (2025), and Her/Вона (forthcoming).

This (Im)possible to Stay event is realised as part of the series OKO Stockholm: Voices of Ukraine, initiated by the Gergina Foundation and co-missioners. Please check the main page for Information on other events in the period Nov 27-30, 2025. And follow OKO Nordic here!
